As I prepare to go in for another implant adjustment this afternoon, I want to take a few minutes to reflect and share some of the recent developments in my life with sound. Last week was a tremendous week of growth and progress. My brain seems to be getting the hang of things and is processing sounds at a much faster pace. Since my implant activation, I have learned that sound is everywhere, but I did not know what exactly the sounds were. Last week, I walked into a store and noticed they had music playing. I thought to myself “oh how delightful, I like this store even more now!” Then I went into another, and realized they were playing music too! Then I went to a restaurant and found they too were playing tunes. I commented on this to a “hearing” friend and she said “oh yeah, most all stores and restaurants play music”. How wonderful!!
Another exciting milestone for me last week was ordering at a drive through ALL BY MYSELF! This may seem silly and insignificant to most of you, but I assure you that in my world, it is a BIG DEAL. I had my daughter in the car with me. As we pulled up to the order kiosk, my daughter leaned forward and prepared to interpret for me, then watched in disbelief as I completed the order all by myself. I did not even realize what I had done until I turned around and looked at her stunned face. It then hit me as well. We both stared at each other wide eyed with open mouths till I broke into a wide smile and let out a loud “WHOOOP!”
I am also finding that my kids are extremely noisy! Does anyone have some quite ones that would like to trade with me?
